Adam Ansels Zone system

18 Dec

Together with the monochrome part of the DPP course my attention went to Ansel Adams, who I think is one of the greatest nature photographers. Not only practical but even theoretical a heavy weight by e.g. introducing his Zone system for both exposure and darkroom work.

Here is a link to a good explanation of the whole idea from LuminousLandscapes.

But is it needed today?

According to several pages not mentioned here is there no need for the zone system but in my opinion is it good to have at least a basic understanding of it because it widens your consciousness about tones, black and white and differences in the frame and how a light meter works and how it can be fooled.
